And the birds that were lighted on their limbs took wing into night

The earth broke open, how the water rushed the hole to fill
And it swallowed you down just like a mouth taking a pill

It closed as it opened, oh the quiet after your cries
I was left scrambling in soil with tears flying from my eyes

With the song you inspire
But the flame's grown dim
Like some sad old hymn

So I hid up in your room and made your mom think it was you
Leaving notes around the house just like you always used to do

I got angry I got tired as I screamed in your pillow
As you were trapped inside the earth 17,000 ft below

I went out into the woods and looked for paths that led to you,
Some cave in mountainside or well whose bottom no one knew

But I saw you daily in the folds of kind feverish dreams
And at night your specter hiding in the darkened world's seams

I took your diary and filled it up with words that came to me
Some wellspring deep inside that gushes out in tortured poetry

I scrawled hymns in your name until the rumor of the summer storms
